Quick question regarding kickstarter, what happens if the goal isn’t reached, but you put money into it? Do you get refunded or something?

I was kinda hoping to see a “fund X and get every episode as they are released”, but oh well. I think I’ll wait a bit and see how much funds it can get, still early though. Kinda want to back it now, but I think I’ll hold off until it’s closer to 7k.

Are you forced to accept the rewards though. (Silly question, I know) But if I were to back it, I kinda just want to do that. I don’t really care about rewards. Although early beta one is tempting. >_>

So, how will the release look for this? One episode every month or two, like that of TellTale’s The Walking Dead, or released after every episode is finished and ready for release? What will happen if it gets more than the required amount? I’ve seen some kickstarters get thousands above their goal, but the extra money wasn’t used to add anything to the project. (Would you use extra money to improve certain aspects, perhaps?)

Anyway, good luck and I hope it goes through. I don’t have enough money to afford to fund like 5k, so I’ll wait and see how it goes before adding whatever I can afford. (that’s a promise)

Oh and I don’t know if it’s intended or not, but clicking the picture leads to the previous failed kickstarter, might be a bit confusing for some? I know the kickstarter link in the text leads to real one, but just letting you guys know in case it was unintended.

        Whoops, good catch! >_>

You don’t actually get charged by Kickstarter until the project’s deadline is reached and it has been fully funded, so you don’t lose anything if the goal isn’t reached. If you pledge $45, you do get every episode as it’s released (as well as some other stuff, such as some wallpapers and music).

And technically, you’re not forced to accept the rewards. Most of them are just download links that are sent to you, so you could just forward them to a friend or not download them.

It’ll released similarly to The Walking Dead, yeah. As each episode is finished, it’ll be released. I’m aiming (fingers crossed) to release around 3 episodes a year once we get off the ground. And yeah, extra money will be used to both improve the game and to fund the later episodes.

Thanks again for your interest. I greatly appreciate it!

    Almost 2k already. :D

Wait a second.. Was that kickstarter discount always there? >_>
So if you fund 45, you’ll get all 8 on release? No additional charges?
Hmm.. Tempting.. But I’m still curious about my question regarding kickstarter and stuff. Mind answering those or direct me to somewhere which can?

    • projectbc
      January 6, 2013 at 9:35 pm

I replied to your earlier comment about how KS works. And yep – pledge $45, get each episode as it’s released, no additional charge.

Can I put an reservation on one of those beta tester rewards until I can the funds in order so I can back this thing? >_>

    • projectbc
      January 6, 2013 at 9:27 pm

You’re not actually charged until the deadline is reached, so you can pledge now and cancel later if it turns out you can’t do it.

    January 6, 2013 at 9:38 pm

Fast and informative as always, thanks.

3 episodes a year, so this story won’t be finished for at least, 3 years?

    • projectbc
      January 6, 2013 at 9:43 pm

Something like that. It’s hard to say precisely because not every episode is made equally. Some of them will be pretty easy to produce and some of them won’t. For example, when it advances in time, we need to remake the assets for every major character on account of their being older now.

Fortunately, (I hope) the quick release schedule will keep you from having to wait too long at a time.

    January 6, 2013 at 9:48 pm

I’ll find a way to make a donation right now, does it matter if someone else does it for me? >_>
I don’t have a kickstarter account, which seems to be needed to back money, but I do know someone who does. Would it be possible to get them to back it and give me whatever comes out of it?

    • projectbc
      January 6, 2013 at 9:49 pm

Sure thing. You might need to drop me a message to remind me when the time comes, but that should be no problem at all.

  6. Sara
    January 6, 2013 at 9:52 pm

So do you get emailed codes or something? How does it work? Just need details, really. Going “Hey, I need you to fund this kickstarter for me, kthxbie” won’t exactly help my case much.. ^_^”

    • projectbc
      January 6, 2013 at 9:56 pm

Most likely, you’ll get emailed with a download link with a redemption code when the game is out.

  7. Sara
    January 6, 2013 at 10:04 pm

“Most likely”, huh? What are the less likely scenarios?

Still, I’m sure I can use my persuasive charm to get it funded, ha ha.

In other words, plead for help.. >_>

Last question, can you still fund even though the goal has been reached?

    • projectbc
      January 6, 2013 at 10:05 pm

Umm…Actually, I don’t know how else I would do it. It would probably be with a download link + promo code. >_>

And yeah, you can pledge up until the deadline is reached.

      • Sara
        January 6, 2013 at 10:11 pm

So in theory, I can get someone to fund it for me and just give me whatever they are emailed?

      • projectbc
        January 6, 2013 at 10:12 pm

        Yeah, of course.

  8. Sara
    January 6, 2013 at 10:14 pm

So how exactly will the gameplay work? I mean, the video showed some things, but is that all there is to it? Any towns? Buying equipment? Finding treasure? Stuff like what you’d find in a “normal” RPG game? Or is it more like a visual novel with some battles thrown in?

    • Sara
      January 6, 2013 at 10:16 pm

I missed the prototype section. >_<
I'll give that a try now and maybe that will show me a bit more what it's like.

      • projectbc
        January 6, 2013 at 10:19 pm

The prototype just shows what a typical dungeon is like, so there aren’t any towns or NPCs to talk to, but it’ll give you an idea of the format.

    • projectbc
      January 6, 2013 at 10:18 pm

Yep, it works the same way as any other RPG, just with a slightly different format. There are towns (usually one central town per episode), although you don’t “buy” anything. Being as rich as you are, the game doesn’t track money, so it’s assumed you have as much money as you need to buy anything. Instead, most decent goods need to be synthesized from rare ingredients that you find.

  9. Sara
    January 6, 2013 at 10:32 pm

Well, the demo was kinda fun, but I don’t really understand what leveling up does or how you do it, seeing as battles don’t give EXP far as I could tell.

Mind explaining a bit more about that?

    • projectbc
      January 6, 2013 at 10:42 pm

A lot of the mechanics (such as level) aren’t really explored in the prototype since it’s so short. The way it works is that events grant you EXP, +points to stats, or new skills, sometimes based on the route you take or what decisions you make. For example, when Korelli asks you what to do in the beginning, that’s echoed in the attack by the giant bird, and she gains points in a different stat accordingly.

  10. Sara
    January 7, 2013 at 12:15 am

Ah, sounds interesting. Will dungeons be bigger than that one? How does town hubs look? Will the background always just be one image per area or change based on the node you walk onto?

    • projectbc
      January 7, 2013 at 12:41 am

Yeah, that’s the first (technically second) dungeon in the game and serves largely as a tutorial. Dungeons will also grow as the story progresses as new quests open up and you gain party members who can access parts of it that you couldn’t before. Towns will use the same format, but have NPC nodes, or shop nodes, and so on. For the most part, backgrounds will stay the same; they’re a pretty nontrivial expense in the game’s development.

3k now? 29 days to go.. I think you guys might just make it. :)

    • projectbc
      January 7, 2013 at 9:53 am

      Here’s to hoping!

  12. Sara
    January 7, 2013 at 12:56 pm

So how come you went from asking for 20k to just 8k?
My friend is very skeptical that you’ll be able to do it or not. (But that’s all kickstarters in general, It seems)

So any thoughts you’d like to share?

    • projectbc
      January 7, 2013 at 1:11 pm

The original Kickstarter was for the full game, but now we’re only asking enough to fund episode 1. One might ask “well, why aren’t you asking for 1/8 of 20,000?” but a lot of the expense is upfront in assets that’ll be reused (e.g., the main characters).

  13. Sara
    January 7, 2013 at 1:12 pm

    “because I’m a realist
    They go
“We can do this for 20,000!”
and then when that doesn’t happen, they go “Oh, j/k guys! We can totally do this for 8!””

I get what he’s getting at, but I trust you guys are able to do it. Needless to say, he’s not giving anything to this kickstarter.

  14. Sara
    January 7, 2013 at 1:21 pm

I’ll show it to him, but I doubt he’ll change his mind, I don’t think he trusts Kickstarters at all.
The one I asked to fund it isn’t the same person though. I just tried asking if some of my friends wanted to fund it. (Not many seemed interested, sadly)

    But I am. >_>

    • projectbc
      January 7, 2013 at 1:32 pm

I appreciate the effort! Closing in on $4k now – more than 10x as much as we had this time in May, haha.

  15. Sara
    January 7, 2013 at 1:37 pm

    *Sigh*
Well, I need some new friends now. No one except maybe my older brother saw an interest in this. >_> (He’d play the previous ones first, then decide to fund it or not)

    So, yay?

I’ll add my share when I can talk to my friend in person, but that’s at least another extra 45 if anything.

    • projectbc
      January 7, 2013 at 1:41 pm

Thanks much! Every little bit counts.

  16. Sara
    January 8, 2013 at 10:11 pm

5k, keep this up and it’s sure to get more than enough funding. :D

    • projectbc
      January 8, 2013 at 10:13 pm

Yeah, we were really strong for the first couple days but now it’s really leveling off. Starting to run out of ideas on how to spread the word. >_<

  17. Sara
    January 12, 2013 at 3:44 pm

    :(
It’s been slowing down a lot now. Should I be worried?

    • projectbc
      January 12, 2013 at 4:06 pm

Most of the momentum is usually focused on the first few days, so it’s to be expected that it slows down after that.

  18. Sara
    January 13, 2013 at 12:17 am

Will you lower it to 6k if it doesn’t make it? =(
I wanna see this game made. >.<

    • projectbc
      January 13, 2013 at 12:55 am

You can’t change the goal once the project launches. We’re up to $6700 now and still 24 days or so left to raise the remaining $1300.

      • Sara
        January 13, 2013 at 6:10 am

Let’s play with the “What if” scenario and the game does not get funded this time either, will you drop it completely or lower the amount even more?

      • projectbc
        January 13, 2013 at 11:43 am

It’s going to be made one way or the other. We would just have to significantly decrease the production values and I would fund it out of pocket, so the development time would increase significantly. For us to move forward, it’s a game that must be made.

  19. January 13, 2013 at 1:52 am

First off just a little note for Sara, Kick starter has a project success rate around 90% for projects that make half there funding in the first 48 hours, Vacant sky managed it so I’m sure they will get funded. Now my question, are you planning on selling more of those art books after your kick starter project has ended or are they as much of a limited edition item as they seem? And of course as a fan I have to ask if they will be signed?

    • projectbc
      January 13, 2013 at 2:17 am

I haven’t decided yet what the future of the limited edition items will be, so I’ll hold off on commenting at this time. As for having the books be signed, I hadn’t thought about it, but if it’s something backers want, then I’d be happy to.

      • January 15, 2013 at 12:36 am

I can’t speak for the other backers but I’m pledged in for a copie of the art book and would like it signed by any members of your team who are willing. (as long as it’s not too much trouble.) My pledge is under the same name as I’m using hear.

    • Sara
      January 13, 2013 at 6:09 am

      That’s somewhat comforting. Still, 10% though…

    January 13, 2013 at 2:13 am

I… just ran into another problem. During the Genevive fight in Act II, I got a script error for the battle script. Something about an undefined sp_cost or something similar? I closed out of it without thinking before I could copy down the error, but I’m pretty sure that’s what it was. I can play through it again if you need me to, but… help! D:

    • Vasha
      January 13, 2013 at 2:14 am

Haha, I meant to post that in the Vacant Sky Act II+ released post, but this works, too. :P

    • projectbc
      January 13, 2013 at 2:15 am

Huh, that’s a new one. Unfortunately, I haven’t heard of this bug before, so it’s hard for me to diagnose. Best I can do is ask you to give it another shot and, if it happens again, tell me the exact text of the error and what happened right before. Sorry I can’t be of more help.

      • Vasha
        January 13, 2013 at 2:29 pm

Well, I just got a vital hit Rend to Sorrows on her, so I took her out in the second round. All I can say is I’m guessing some skill that she has crashed? Don’t know what exactly, but at least I get to keep playing! :D

  21. Sara
    January 14, 2013 at 10:06 pm

    $7,152
    pledged of $8,000 goal
    21
    days to go

Okay, I can rest easy now. >.>

    • projectbc
      January 14, 2013 at 10:56 pm

Don’t say that! You’ll curse it!

  22. January 15, 2013 at 12:40 am

I really like Sarians design. If I’m not mistaken she’s got her self a staff of Hermes. Nice work on the art preview,
