Maybe I missed it somewhere on this blog, but is there somewhere to buy/download the soundtrack for the game(s)? I am really enjoying it. :)

You can buy the soundtrack from BandCamp

What is that makes your basic attack upgrade? Like, Slash 2 instead of 1? Been putting points into ACC and SPD for a while, is it ATK that affects the upgrade? (One of them already learned Shot 3)

    • projectbc
      December 21, 2012 at 10:25 am

Reaching a certain level. Auria’s attack upgrades at levels that are multiplies of 6.

Just got to the part where you need to choose, I kept reloading, hoping, wishing I could change it, somehow get a happy ending out of it, but no. Well done, you made me sad. :(

      Sorry! :(

And could someone tell me what was in the box in that underground area? I accidentally started the “flip the lever” quest and never got to open it or go inside the door in that room. Anything quest related? I can live with choices made, but I can’t with uncompleted quest, I’d have to restart if it’s something quest related. :(

I need to ask, does the gifts I keep finding serve a purpose or should I sell them? I don’t seem to be able to give them to anyone, maybe I need to progress further?

Oh and I might have asked before, but do you guys have a forum or somewhere to discuss the game(s)?
If not, I’ll just keep cluttering up the comment section, ha ha. =3

    • projectbc
      December 21, 2012 at 3:24 pm

We had a forum once upon a time, but there wasn’t enough activity to justify continuing to keep it up, so feel free to drop your comments here. It’s what the comments section is here for! As for the gifts, you can use them at an event after you complete all three main quests.

“Ray, you’re sleeping on the floor.” Ha ha ha.
Let me just say I’m enjoying this game immensely so far. Hope it won’t take too long to get Act 3 ready as well, I get the feeling I’ll want to see the next part as soon as I’m done with this one. Good job making this, I’m loving it. :)

    P.S
Hope there isn’t some limits to how many comments I can leave here, I don’t know where else to put my thoughts as I play, so this will have to do for now. ^_~

I’m glad to hear it! Act III shouldn’t take quite as long since there’s not as much to change, although there is some new content that needs to be written yet. It’s very rewarding to have someone enjoy the game after spending untold hundreds of hours on it.

And feel free to keep commenting here. I don’t mind one bit!

Does the choices I make change the story at later parts? In particular, the harder choice I had to make earlier, with the team and all. If I pick the other or none at all for example? (Trying to avoid spoilers) Or is it all just minor differences?

And what was in that treasure box in the underground area? The area with the levers you need to assign team mates to? I missed my chance to get it and I’m wondering if it was anything quest related. Okay, a better question would be, can you miss quest items, as in, cannot go back and get them after that quest area is done? Still missing a wine glass and some artifact or something for two side quests.

Now for a question about stats, can you change them at all? Like, make Ray less oblivious for example? Ha ha. And I noticed a thing in the skill menu, one of the skills say you need “Speed Demon” to unlock it, but no such skill is in the list. Is that a skill that was given a new name?

  10. projectbc
    December 21, 2012 at 4:37 pm

Yes, the choices you make earlier on can, in fact, have a significant impact upon the story later on, although it may not be obvious on a first playthrough how.

I can’t recall what specifically were in those treasure chests, but no quest items are missable as far as I can recall. There is a point of no return in Act II+ (the game will make it very obvious), but you can return in Act III. As for the other party member stats, no, you can’t. ;)

As for “Speed Demon,” gah! I thought for sure I fixed that. >_< Yeah, it's a renamed skill.

  11. Sara
    December 21, 2012 at 5:50 pm

If it makes you feel any better, it’s only 1 skill that has the description wrong. :)

I will however, be forever haunted by the treasure chest that got away.. :(

Different endings seem to give different names for Act 3 (The Current Angel of Justice, and one other). Will these be released at the same time, as the same program, or separately. Thanks, and great job! The entire game was a blast.

  13. projectbc
    December 21, 2012 at 8:36 pm

They’ll be released together – no worries there. That said, Act III’ will be considerably shorter than the main Act III, so I recommend holding onto an Angel of Justice-compliant save. Thanks for playing and I’m glad you enjoyed it!

  14. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 10:44 am

What exactly does “That said, Act III’ will be considerably shorter than the main Act III” mean?

    • projectbc

You’ll see when you complete Act II+.

Who made the music for the mansion? I really like it. :)
I don’t want to ever leave this place. <3

  16. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 11:37 am

Omg, creepiest corridor area ever! I miss the music from before.. :(
All I feel now is dread and impending doom. I don’t want to be in this place anymore.
I won’t be surprised if the new woman tries to stab me in the back. She seems shady to me. >:(

    • projectbc
      December 22, 2012 at 11:41 am

It’s okay. Maladorr Manor is actually very warm and welcoming. It wants to be your friend.

      Forever.

  17. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 11:47 am

Yeah…. Let’s NOT go into the super creepy door of doom. >_>
Do I have to go in there to progress? I’d rather not.

  18. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 11:50 am

Does these fragments I keep finding do anything? I’ve got 3 now, like some sort of super secret side quest somewhere? :D

Or just related to the main story?

    • projectbc
      December 22, 2012 at 11:52 am

Are you referring to the Azure Fragments? They’re usable for something in Act III.

      • Sara
        December 22, 2012 at 11:58 am

Yes, those. I’ve got 4 now. How many do I need? Is there a set amount of them?

      • projectbc
        December 22, 2012 at 11:59 am

You don’t need a certain amount. They’re each usable when the time comes.

  19. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 11:54 am

Virad Artifacts, I showed him the mask already, are there others I can find? If so, what are they?

    • projectbc
      December 22, 2012 at 11:58 am

There are three: The Virad Mask, the Virad Uniform, and the Virad Hood.

      • Sara
        December 22, 2012 at 12:02 pm

How do I get the hood and uniform? Do I need to find Virads to fight? I forgot where I found the mask. :(

      • projectbc
        December 22, 2012 at 12:07 pm

All the Virad items are random drops from the Virad in Boris Island’s warehouse.

  22. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 12:13 pm

Are there specific gifts that suits the different people? I noticed giving a pocketwatch to Zagris got me a positive response as well as an item.

    • projectbc
      December 22, 2012 at 12:14 pm

Yes. Each person has a special gift that will give a unique response.

  23. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 12:16 pm

Which ones respond to what person? Reloading to get it right is getting a bit tedious. >.<

  24. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 12:19 pm

Okay, Narrowed it down a bit.
    Zagris: Pocket watch
    Vel: Teddy
    Ray: Colone

    Now to guess the rest..

  25. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 12:24 pm

    Seri: Journal

    Hmm, 2 to go.

  26. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 12:27 pm

Blaise got a tie, because he’s impossible to find gifts for, ha ha. ;D

Give me a hint for the last person? =3

    • projectbc
      December 22, 2012 at 12:31 pm

Who are you missing, Rien? She wants a gift as classy as she is.

  27. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 12:30 pm

I gave Mia the melody box, I mean, music box. Got a winter shard, was that correct?
    What about the last person?

    • projectbc
      December 22, 2012 at 12:31 pm

      Yep, that’s right.

  28. Sara

Does Mia have a crush on Auria? =3

      What do you think?

  29. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 12:47 pm

Where exactly do I find Rien? I’ve found everyone else, but her.

    • projectbc
      December 22, 2012 at 12:49 pm

Most likely, you’ll find her near the south end of the bridge.

  30. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 12:50 pm

And what’s with the creepy guy stalking Seri? >_>

  31. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 12:53 pm

Gave Rien wine, got Archangel Serum, I assume this was the correct reward. She seemed pleased. Do I get to watch the fireworks if I leave the area via the terminal?

    • projectbc
      December 22, 2012 at 12:53 pm

Yup, that was correct. And no, sadly there’s no actual fireworks event.

      • Sara
        December 22, 2012 at 12:55 pm

Aw, that one guy hyped it up and everything. :(

  32. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 12:54 pm

Something that confused me a bit though, I’m still getting EXP from battles, but the party level doesn’t increase and I’m not given any new action points to spend. Is this intentional, a limit put on this act or is it a bug of some sort?

    • projectbc
      December 22, 2012 at 12:55 pm

It’s the level cap for Act II+.

  33. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 12:58 pm

Now for something I touched on earlier, the skill Parry says you need to have learned “Eyes of the Hawk”. I’m assuming what it should be referring to is “Silent Focus I”?

Lock On Requires Eyes of the Hawk II.
    Warp requires Speed Demon II.
    Determination requires Draconic Longevity II.

    Everything else is in order.

    • projectbc
      December 22, 2012 at 12:59 pm

Yes, that’s correct. I could’ve sworn I fixed it, sorry.

      • Sara
        December 22, 2012 at 1:03 pm

It’s quite alright, just thought you might want to know it’s there.

  34. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 1:02 pm

Now for another question, does the Hall of Legends serve any purpose this Act? I mean, you go there earlier and find that empty book, but I’ve not been back there since. Least, nothing happened there when I went again.

    • projectbc
      December 22, 2012 at 1:04 pm

      Not in Act II.

  35. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 1:05 pm

“I think it’s time to go back to Maladorr Manor”

No, no, no, no, no, no. Nope, we are not going back there. Not now, not ever. It was creepy enough the first time! Please don’t make me go back there.. =[

  36. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 1:10 pm

So, what purpose does the perfume I got in Act 1 serve, I’ve been keeping it with me forever now.

  37. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 1:13 pm

And how come I can’t use Second Wind in combat anymore? It worked once, but not anymore. Is there some special condition that I need to meet?

    • projectbc
      December 22, 2012 at 1:16 pm

Really! That’s very bizarre. I’ll look into it.

      • Sebastian
        December 24, 2012 at 6:04 pm

Yup, the same has happened to me. I thought it might be used when in low HP, but I can’t seem to use it anymore! (Act II+)

      • Vasha
        January 14, 2013 at 3:39 pm

I don’t remember ever using it, and I can’t use it. :( I wasted two level ups (second wind and an enhancement) on a useless skill!

  38. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 1:24 pm

Is it normal that I can level up to lv15, only for it to reset to lv14, but still give me points to spend in stats? (In theory, giving me the ability to grind all stats to max)

  39. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 1:27 pm

And is Prism Slash suppose to take it’s HP cost for every single enemy? Example: Prism Slash costs 400 HP to use, there are 4 enemies. When used, I lose 1600HP, honestly makes the attack pretty useless, consider I’m killed the next time I’m hit unless I dodge.

    • projectbc
      December 22, 2012 at 1:45 pm

Err…nope….>_> How did all this get by testing? Gah!

  40. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 1:55 pm

You can only do so much, glad to help by reporting these things. ^_^
I’m still gaining lv15s, so to speak. My stats are all over 250 now. (Without equipment) Trying to get that uniform helped me gain a bunch of levels.

    • projectbc
      December 22, 2012 at 1:57 pm

hahaha…whoops. Yeah, that’s not supposed to happen. I’ll have it fixed when Act III comes out.

      Hopefully.

  41. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 2:01 pm

Does that mean I’ll lose my stats? >.>
Because, it’s benefiting me greatly, despite being a bug.

    • projectbc
      December 22, 2012 at 2:03 pm

No, you’ll keep your stats. :P

  42. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 2:03 pm

At least I know it’s not intended. I’d be back to be ask why the bosses are such pushovers. :p

  43. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 2:06 pm

    >_<
No uniform yet and I just gained another lv15. I'll be maxed out before I find one, curse my luck!

That being said, I'm having a lot of fun. Any plans for more games once Act III is done?

    • projectbc
      December 22, 2012 at 2:08 pm

Oh, most certainly. Contention is just the beginning.

We’ll be running a Kickstarter for the new Vacant Sky game in January.

  44. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 2:21 pm

The same as the previous one? The other one was interesting, but as I recall, didn’t meet it’s required funding? What’s the new one about if it’s not the other one from before?

And, I know it might sound a bit strange, but part of the reason I was interested in this to begin with was due to Auria. Not many games tend to have female main characters, even less have good ones. If this game had some generic male lead I might have ignored it when I first saw it.

Not to say male leads can’t be good, interesting characters make any game good, just that I find male main characters to be a dime a dozen, or however that saying goes. Anyway, just make interesting characters, I guess and I’ll keep playing. :) (Although more female leads would be welcome)

  45. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 2:27 pm

Could you tell me where to find the wine glass for the final side quest? It said place of worship, so I thought to check the church, but found nothing. I don’t want to go to the creepy mansion until I find the glass and finish the side quest, but I’ve got no idea where it could be. :(

    • projectbc
      December 22, 2012 at 2:31 pm

It is in the Viadahn church. If I recall correctly, it’s near the top of the church, on the right.

  46. projectbc
    December 22, 2012 at 2:30 pm

Yes, it’s for the same game (Awakening), but some stuff has changed this time. You can read more about what’s new here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/projectbc/vacant-sky-awakening-reinventing-classical-rpgs/posts

I understand how you feel about the protagonist, but I don’t (usually) choose a character’s gender arbitrarily. In the case of Contention, I wanted to develop a story about the emotional and mental troubles that a teenage girl struggles with and how her journey affects her development. I’ve told that story now and now there’s a different story that I want to tell, and that story necessitates the protagonist being male just as Contention’s required Auria to be female.

That’s not to say that I’m not going to have any more female protagonists. Just that the story I want to tell next is something different. Although the protagonist of Awakening isn’t female, there are many female main characters who still play a crucial role in the story, so hopefully that will make it a little less disappointing. :P

Also – When the time comes, I don’t think you’ll find Dakura to be your typical male main character.

  47. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 2:36 pm

That’s okay, I was more so thinking of the games that only use male lead cause it will “sell better”, which is almost every Triple AAA game ever.. >_>

If it’s cause the story demands it, I’m fine with it and since this game is so much fun, I’d probably want to check out whatever else you guys make. :)
I don’t normally overlook games just cause their main characters are males though, it’s just that I feel a bit tired of it sometimes.

Just make him interesting and I’ll probably be okay with it, unless he has the worst personality ever. I have faith you’ll make him okay though.

So…. About that wine glass.. >.>

    • projectbc
      December 22, 2012 at 2:39 pm

The protagonist of Awakening is one Dakura Maladorr, a name you should recently have become acquainted with (if not, give it a little longer…). I wouldn’t have chosen him if I didn’t think he had a fun story to tell.

      • Sara
        December 22, 2012 at 2:44 pm

Wait a minute… Wasn’t that the name of the people who owned the manor? =o

        Now I’m interested indeed.

      • saa
        December 24, 2012 at 2:31 am

Quest is incomplete in my log too. Last thing I was given was Red Queen.

    • projectbc
      December 22, 2012 at 2:41 pm

Old machinery? Don’t think I’ve seen anything that qualifies, any ideas?

I think the one you’re looking for is in the factory where you fought the Virad.

Where do I find this temple to get the wooden Idol?

    • projectbc
      December 22, 2012 at 2:54 pm

You can finish this quest in Act III, if you’re in a hurry. :P The temple is where you encountered Kasch.

  54. Sara
    December 22, 2012 at 2:56 pm

Kasch? I’ve been playing in bursts for a few days, I forgot where..

Was not aware you could do the quest in Act III though. That’s useful information.

  85. mixerupper13
    December 24, 2012 at 6:33 pm

Just one problem, not with the game at all.

The first time Kasch makes you choose between Seri and Vanquish, I chose to fight Kasch because I didn’t know that they’d both die. I am responsible for their deaths, but it was my ignorance that caused it.

But the second time, I had foreknowledge. If you know something will happen and you do nothing to prevent it, you are responsible. But I don’t have a choice to save both of them. It makes me feel horrible replaying it because this time, I agree that I bear complete responsibility for his/her death.

    • projectbc
      December 24, 2012 at 7:27 pm

A fair point, though I’d like to point out that before the decision, Kasch says that if you move from your spot, he’ll kill them, and attacking him necessitates moving.

  86. mixerupper13
    December 24, 2012 at 8:12 pm

But not moving means killing one of them off while attacking might stall long enough or maybe the demons will protect Kasch instead of killing Seri and Vanquish or maybe any number of things could happen.

As Seri says, I have to believe that there is a way out. I guess you could say that believing there is a way out is ironically the way out of murdering one of them by intention, but it’s more than that. There are some decisions that you make that reflect the truth like math and science questions, and there are some questions that reflect who you are.

Obviously, I’m not the same as everyone, but for me a small chance that both will live is preferable to certainty of a death. Foreknowledge takes away that small chance.

From your comment though, I’m guessing that the scene is designed to force the player to murder someone intentionally. I guess I cheated that scene the first time around, so now I have to actually face it the second time.

        December 25, 2012 at 3:33 pm

Oh really? Is it the “I can’t choose” option? How is that any different from just attacking Kasch though?

If that is the way to save both of them, it’s weird, isn’t it? You’re not responsible for their murders for not choosing since they both live, but if you attack Kasch you are responsible for their murders because they happen to be dead.

      • projectbc
        December 25, 2012 at 3:39 pm

      • projectbc
        December 25, 2012 at 1:36 am

I believe Stormpike is in a chest in the factory in Boris Island. There are two versions of the factory dungeon, a normal version and a dark version. If you’re on a route where you go to the dark version, then you need to go to the original to get it.

    ahahahaha how does that happen?

I believe its when Vel impersonates Auria, and then Auria escapes the Virad to get to Rayonne. Instead of going to the portal, I walked out of the warehouse to buy items, found I couldn’t get back into the warehouse since it was closed, and walked back to the hotel. Then, I met “Auria”, started the whole process again, and this time I went ahead and confronted Weapon and his boss.

Out of curiosity, and since I didn’t play the original… How do you save both? Is it some elaborate process or did one of the options given to you enable you to do it in the previous version of the game? Why decide to remove the possibility of saving both? (Although I like the forced consequence of not being able to)

    • projectbc
      December 27, 2012 at 9:50 pm

In the original, you always saved both. Whoever “died” would just barely survive, so your choice ultimately didn’t matter aside from changing some dialog. The reason was because the amount of branching required was…staggering, to say the least, so though it was kind of a copout, that’s how it worked in the original.

      • mixerupper13

Ok, I Just want to tell you that your game is absolutely epic. I found your act 2+ link and played them straight threw. I still can’t believe it, I actually care about your charters. I have 2 questions. First: any chance of getting you to show those “pro’s” on the final fantasy teams how to wright real characters. and second do I need to wait for act 3+ to be finished in order to import my save or is there a way to import it into your old act 3. I really want to finish the game but I want to finish it with all the mistakes i’ve made and not use a blank slate that is available in your old act 3.

    • projectbc
      December 30, 2012 at 9:29 pm

Thanks for playing. I’m glad you enjoyed it! The characters are always the heart of Vacant Sky games and they sometimes take the story in directions I never could have planned. Unfortunately, as Act II+ just came out, the revamped Act III is not out yet and your save won’t be compatible with the old Act III. Sorry! Not only that, but a lot of the choices you can make in Act II+ weren’t in the original, so there wouldn’t be any way to continue in the original game.

  94. December 30, 2012 at 10:49 pm

I have some problems and I really hope that someone will help me. I can’t seem to anything in the orkan mansion. There is a door that apears and dissapears, but how do I open it? I can’t seem to advance further in the game. What do I have to do?Why did that Kasch guy become evil? Does in have anything to to with the choices I made in the first game? I really need a WALKTHROUGH :( Btw I also found some bugs. I can’t use Auria’s skill second wind at all, my game crashes while I am in the temple trying to rescue that guy and find Kasch.

The plot, the dialogue and the way the characters interact with each other is good. The music and the art are splendid. :D
There are a few things that I dislike:

The saving process is KILLING everything that I like about this game. ( Can’t you do anything about it :(?
The enemies that keep coming back to life when you exit the building or try to save. ( Maybe only a few of them should come back to life, not all).
Level restriction. ( The monsters are way too tough).

    • projectbc
      January 2, 2013 at 4:26 pm

First: Thanks for playing, and sorry for the problems you’ve run into! I’ll do my best to help.

-In Maladorr Manor, opening the flickering door requires breaking each of the glowing seals, of which I believe there are six.
-The bug with Second Wind is known and should be fixed in the next release.
-Can you give me specifics as to what happens when the game crashes? Does it happen in battles when you use Stormpike? If so, try to avoid using it and see if that helps.

What is it about the save process that you don’t like? Is it the resurrecting monsters? If so, I can look into that. Also, if you didn’t know, you can escape from most battles hassle free by selecting Escape in the battle menu. And as for the difficulty – yeah, sorry about that, I’ll try making it a bit easier in the next release. It’s tough to get right; most testers complained that the game was far too easy, and I guess I swung the pendulum too far in the other direction.

Hope that helps. Sorry again for all the trouble you ran into!

I have never actually left feedback for this game, despite playing it pretty much from the start. I feel like it’s high time I do so. I love every aspect of this and I’m looking forward to the third act. For now I’m still playing through the second. I did notice one small bug which I do not think has been mentioned — I took my trip to Viadahn and found that I could, after speaking with Meridian the first time and being made to go to bed, re-enter the “hotel room” when I’d awoken and discover the scene with Vel and Ray inside, despite not having met Vel yet. It’s just a minor thing, but I thought I’d mention it.

By the way, I’m that girl that tried to do a crappy cover of the first act’s opening song. I just adore the soundtrack of this game so much. I’m sorry I didn’t ask before doing so, but I was wondering if in the future I could cover the second act’s opening as well? It’s not something for sure, but I thought I’d ask just in case. :) Again, my apologies for going ahead and singing it without asking at first.

Thank you for an absolutely delightful and well-thought-out game. Interesting characters, a fascinating world and interesting history, all the different options and the twists and turns of the plot, nice art… Not to mention the great music. It’s definitely up there on my favourite games list compared with everything I’ve played in the past. Good luck with the rest of your projects and keep up the amazing work. As many others said, I’m eagerly awaiting the third act.

Hello! Thanks for stopping by and commenting! And thanks again for the very kind words! I’ve actually heard that bug report before – oops! Don’t know how that slipped by me. I’ll see what I can do about fixing it.

And there’s no need to apologize for doing the cover at all! I don’t mind it at all. Go ahead and cover as many of the songs as you like.

Is Act 3 out yet? >.>
Anyway.. Just how much replay value does the game have? Will the story change a lot depending on choices you make? Or will it just change small things here and there? (More than one ending perhaps?)

And more importantly, does the ending have a little boy in it that offers you 3 choices that are pretty much the same? =p

    • projectbc
      January 4, 2013 at 1:06 am

Afraid it’s not out yet. :P My focus is going to be on Awakening this month, since the Kickstarter is launching this weekend (fingers crossed!).

As for the story changing – yes, it changes significantly. Like, moreso than in Act II+ significantly. Like, there are three completely different main plots depending on what your choices are. There were five endings in the original, and the new version will have at least six total.

If Awakening gets the funds it needs, how long would it take to get it released? An rough estimate? A year? Two?

    • projectbc
      January 5, 2013 at 1:40 am

Episode 1 should be here by April. In general, because we planned it out better and know what we’re doing, we can probably produce 3-4 episodes a year, so it’ll take around two years to finish it.

So would you need to buy every episode separately or is it free like Vacant Sky?.

    So, I finished Act II.

    MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD

OMG, this game is one of the saddest ones I’ve ever played. If this was voiced it would be EPIC. I have no idea if my choices in Act I influenced Acts II endings. I really, really wasn’t expecting that. After I opened that door and found out the truth about Auria and Zezzorah I was like O.o. At the festival is there any option to have a date except Mia? I gave all of them presents which they liked and they gave me something in return. Does this mean anything? ( like a better relationship or something). *cries* Why did Weapon die?!! WAHHHHH, he Zaq, Mia and Auria are my favourite characters. Ugh, and that idiot Ray killed poor Mia. Are Ray and Auria canon or something? ( I HOPE NOT cause I don’t like Ray at all). I hate Blaise too… ( He is so mean…). Why did Zaqris had to die too? And Ray just kept geting on my nerves. I can’t believe Auria was jealous of Vel. I really wasn’t expecting that. ( her liking Ray YUCK! They don’t match at all, that’s what I think). I also choose to kill them so I could save Mia cause I like her so much. ( I’d rather pair Auria with Mia than with Ray).

    SPOILER END

I can’t wait to play Act III. Thank you very much project BC for releasing such beautiful and professional looking games. You guys are the best! XD

    AuriaXWeapon

    FOREVER!!!!! :D

Congratulations on completing Act II+! It sounds like you certainly enjoyed it, and I’m glad to hear it! As for the festival, no, there’s no way to take anyone as a date. As for what counts as canon or not…well, if I said anything, that would spoil the fun, so you’ll just have to wait and find out.

Thanks again for playing and for the very kind words! If you’re enjoying Vacant Sky, we’re launching a Kickstarter for its prequel tomorrow – in which the protagonist is Zezzorah.

If Auria ends up with Ray or something, I’m going to replay the game to have him killed.. >_>

He’s a nice comic relief, but ugh, he can have Vel or something.

Now for something I was wondering, after entering the creepy door and getting all that information. Is Auria immortal? I forgot some of the info you got, but from what I recall, her mother was part of some experiment or something?

      • projectbc
        January 6, 2013 at 11:24 am

Yes, Auria is effectively immortal (which is why she survived Blaise shooting her at the start of the story). If she ever has a child, though, she will pass her immortality and power onto the child and become human again (as happened with her mother).

    • projectbc
      January 6, 2013 at 11:22 am

Ha! No way. I’m thinking somewhere in the vicinity of $10 USD per episode or $60 for all 8. They have a lot more content (and production values) than each of the original acts.

      • Sara
        January 6, 2013 at 8:06 pm

Can I pay in $ then? Would you release it on here as a pay and download or going to try and make it available on services such as Steam?

Does funding the kickstarter when it’s launched give you a free version of the whole thing if you fund enough? >.> (If you fund more than 60, I’d guess?)

      • projectbc
        January 6, 2013 at 9:17 pm

I’m certainly going to try to get the game onto Steam, but failing that, it’ll be offered for purchase up on our website. If you pledge at least $10 on Kickstarter, you get episode 1 for free. If you pledge at least $45, you get all eight – which is a discount from the $60 it will be for non-Kickstarter backers, so you get a good deal by pledging!

Does all the children become like the mother? Or just the female ones? What if she has more than one child? They become semi immortal? (Can’t die from wounds, but old age?)

What happens if she never has a child?

    • projectbc
      January 6, 2013 at 9:13 pm

It’s unclear what would happen if she had a male child. The Archon attribute is passed in full down to her firstborn child, so after that, she would be a regular human again and so a second child would also be human. If she never has a child, she remains as she is forever.

Is that why Mia is all, “I’m a monster, let’s kill everyone” when you first meet her? But wait.. Wasn’t she killed if you choose their side, but if she’s like Auria, wouldn’t she resurrect? I forgot what she said prior to that, so maybe she’s not like Auria.. >_>

I.. I might need to replay the game again, huh?

    • Lilith
      January 6, 2013 at 9:25 pm

She was killed by Ray’s spear which is blessed. ( That means she can die)

      • projectbc
        January 6, 2013 at 9:26 pm

Mia and Auria are fundamentally different, even though they’re both Archons. What being an Archon means is that you have the soul of something else embedded inside you and you take on some of its attributes. Demons possess flawed immortality and can be killed by blessed weapons. As Mia has a demon inside of her, she inherited that trait. It’s unclear what, if any, limitations Zezzorah’s immortality had, but Auria also inherits those.

      (Act II spoiler warning!)

Zezzorah/Dakura Maladorr was the founder of the Virad, 2000 years ago. He originally possessed the power of Night Zero and was using it to destroy the world. He was eventually defeated by the Orkan church and sealed away inside of Annelise Edith – Auria’s mother.

      • Sara
        January 6, 2013 at 9:59 pm

So Awakening focuses on his story? Rise to power? Progression from rich boy to “hitler” of the Vacant Sky universe, so to speak? >.>

I’ll admit, I was interested in his story as I played, so now I’ll definitely get Awakening one way or another. Even if I have to back the whole thing myself. :D
Although, doing so might not be the best financial idea for my right now. >_>

      • projectbc
        January 6, 2013 at 10:02 pm

You hit the nail on the end. Awakening covers the how and the why, showing his rise to power, the unification of Orka, and the creation of the Virad. It answers a lot of questions and raises new considerations for the story as it moves forward. Of course, there are many new characters, some of which are even more interesting than Dakura himself.

I hope you do manage to get them on Steam, I think you’d get even more sales that way. Surely during a sale at any rate, everyone buys stuff they find interesting at 75%, ha ha.

Really? I was under the impression Valve/Steam was quite welcoming of new games from small developers. Although I’d imagine you’d need something solid to present first.

But really, I’ve got no idea how it works as far as getting your game onto steam, so any light you can shed on that would be appreciated. :)

      • projectbc
        January 6, 2013 at 10:05 pm

The way it works is that you submit to a service called Steam Greenlight, where you try to get users to vote up your game. When it gets to a certain number of votes, it gets considered for release on Steam. It’s not explicitly said how many votes are necessary, but it’s a lot.

I’m surprised, because nobody else seems to have gotten this problem. It’s kind of annoying, because the first time I tried playing the original there was a crash, and now there’s a crash again! D:

Gack, that sucks! Are you trying to start a new game in Act I+? I remember someone mentioning this way back when it was first released, but I can’t seem to recall off-hand what the fix was. When did you download it? Could you try downloading a fresh copy?

Hi, I’ve only been playing about 25 mins (loving it so far) but had a query re the keyboard controls for the game.
I noted a couple referrences to the Map (or one in particular anyway in East Naven post office where they insist on giving you one). From what I can see though there isn’t actually a map in-game, or at least I can’t seem to find the keyboard button for it. If there is one could someone please enlighten me ?
Also tried using the ‘X-box’ controller for PC with this (still no button triggers a map!) but moving is really difficult with the analog stick as keep doing diagonals. Is there anyway to get the game to use the D-Pad on the controller ?

    • projectbc
      January 12, 2013 at 11:48 am

There’s no “map button.” Rather, if you went to the post office in East Naven, you received map items. Using them from the menu brings up the map. With regard to the controls, there’s no built-in support for 360 controllers, it just uses the default USB mapping. You’d have to configure the controller in Windows to do so.

It’s about that time again. :)
How is act 3 coming along? :D

I do have a serious question though, with Awakening trying to get it’s funding sorted, who is working on Act 3? Or I guess, once it does get it’s funding, will Act 3 be delayed in favor of making Awakening Episode 1? I don’t recall how large your team is, but I’m going to make the assumption you don’t have too many people to be splitting work onto.

    • projectbc
      January 13, 2013 at 11:32 am

I’ll still be working on Act III. I’m never just working on one project at a time, because I frequently get writer’s block or just bored and then need to change gears for a while. I’ve been working on the Complete Edition concurrently with Awakening for the past year or so. Just priorities change from time to time.

Might be a bit early to tell, but once Awakening is done and over with, do you plan to expand on the Vacant Sky Universe some more? Obviously I don’t know how this story ends, but sine Awakening is prequel of sorts, any plans on making a game set after this one?

    • projectbc
      January 13, 2013 at 6:27 pm

Absolutely, although it’s too early to tell what form it will take. Awakening wasn’t originally intended to exist, actually. I was intending to just continue forward with the story after Act III, but the game we wanted to make was frankly way out of our sights financially so we decided to try something different in order to get better as developers and to hopefully raise the budget we need to continue forward with the story.

Frankly speaking, I think Awakening gives away too much too soon – you’re going to get a lot of answers, more than I wanted to give at this stage. :P

    So… another error. :/

This one happens when Rayonne is fighting with Weapon. It’s always his first turn (after performing Night Wind, that is). This is the error message:

Okay, so I finally got to finish the game. Yay! I’m replaying with some different choices right now (SPOILER: I’m really missing Seri D:). Have a few random questions, though:
    1) Maybe I’m just going crazy, but on the first playthrough I thought I saw an item shop in Orka that let you buy an item that gives Blaise an Awakening, but now I can’t find the shop at all! Am I just making things up? o.O
    2) In Auria’s hometown, there’s a cliff at the far south edge with a chest on it, but I have no idea how to get to it. Is it possible, or are you just taunting me? Same goes for in the Maladorr mansion, actually. In one of the mirror-rooms, there’s a chest behind some bars. Can I get to that or not?

    • projectbc
      January 14, 2013 at 3:51 pm

Congrats on beating it! Make sure you hold onto your complete game in case you don’t like the new outcome you achieve.
      1) It’s in Orka, although I don’t remember which district. It should be there and accessible.
      2) They’re not accessible in Act II+.

      • Vasha

        Will do!
        1) Well, at least I know I’m not going crazy, then. :P

      • Vasha

      • projectbc
        January 14, 2013 at 4:37 pm

      • projectbc

I just found the item shop! I didn’t realize that’s what it was because a) the black sign kind of blends in with the black ground, and b) All of the other enterable buildings have that gray and blue sign. But yay!

    Gifts: Aah, I figured. Cool!

    Infinite LevelUPs bug ftw!

So I went back and just, leveled up a lot more and I think I might have accidentally the whole stat sheet now. >_>
I’m going to start over and not abuse the system this time. Deleting my save just in case. I feel awful about it.

Any plans on trying to fix these “bugs” or will they remain?

      >___>

It’ll all be fixed (hopefully) with the next release (Act III). It’s actually a lot of work to distribute a new release, so I try not to do minor updates for fear of having to keep track of all the different versions and which sites haven’t been updated yet.

Any idea what caused it? I mean, one does not simply break the level up system. :D

Either way, I’ll be happy to break Act 3 for you too. ;)

      January 16, 2013 at 11:50 am

I haven’t looked into it yet. Crunch week for Act II+ was really draining so since release, I’ve kind of distanced myself from it so I can relax. The code in Contention is really, really old and really, really bad, so it’s a huge chore to fix bugs and implement new features.

    January 16, 2013 at 12:22 pm

Why not clean up the code then? I’ll admit I know nothing about coding games, so excuse me if my question come off as extremely ignorant. >_>

It’s just, I’ve never played a game where I could pretty much accidentally break the leveling system.

    • projectbc
      January 16, 2013 at 12:24 pm

Because in the time that it would take me to do that, I could finish programming Awakening, and probably half of another game. Improving bad code is very difficult and time-consuming, especially in a language like Ruby which is notoriously impervious to refactoring.

Okay, try not to break the level system in Awakening then. :)

Seeing as how there’s no EXP or leveling, that shouldn’t be an issue. :P

You never know, you thought these acts were fixed and look how much stuff me and Vasha managed to break. :D

But since your page mentions early beta access, I can help by completely breaking the game early?

    • projectbc
      January 16, 2013 at 2:22 pm

Indeed. Luckily, the new engine and tools VSA are built with will make it much, much, much easier to debug.

Um, kinda unrelated, but do you guys mind if I borrow the names of some of the characters and use them for characters I create in other games? (As in, play, not create)
They are fairly unique and probably won’t have been taken in games that require unique character names for you to play. (Like MMOs)

So I guess I’m asking for permission? Just in case.

I don’t mind at all! That’s very flattering.

I hope this is still the right place for questions; I wasn’t sure if I should clog up the Reddit page with them.

Anyway, there are two things I’d like to ask. First, I’ve been taking notes on bug reports I notice while playing, plus some opinions on writing and game balance — I’m assuming you’d want to hear the former, but I wanted to ask if want crit on the latter before just giving it to you. Also, is there a preferred way for me to get that to you, like commenting here versus creating a thread for bug reports on the Reddit or emailing them somewhere? (Although I’m not quite finished with Act II yet, so I’ll wait until I am to give you my notes regardless.)

Second, I noticed the fanwork contest and I’m starting to get really interested in it. However, I just started playing Vacant Sky recently with the Complete Edition, so I’m not going to know the whole story in time for the deadline unless I get and rush through the old version, which I really don’t want to do. So: is it okay for me to enter the contest with a fanwork made only with knowledge of Acts I-II? I’m asking mainly because I’m thinking of writing fanfiction — probably not plot-heavy fic, but still writing. (I’m not bent on winning or anything, but I’d like to write something and the contest deadline seems like a nice motivation.)

    Thanks in advance!

Sure thing. Ideally, I’d like to start moving these discussions to reddit (easier to navigate plus a searchable archive) but this is fine.

First, thanks for playing and for taking notes on the bugs! The Complete Edition has been a nightmare to test, so unfortunately quite a few things have slipped by us. If you could put them up on a thread on reddit, we can start a public list of all the known issues. As for the critique, feel free to send it along, though you might want to wait until after you’ve finished Act II.

And as for the contest, that’s perfectly fine! Don’t let the close deadline discourage you; we’d love to see what you’ve got, regardless of how much you get done!

That seems to be a problem with using Stormpike. It appears to be bugged in the current release. Avoiding using it should solve the problem. Sorry about that!

  137. June 23, 2013 at 9:58 pm

I have to say, I am mostly impressed about what you have done with the series as a whole (though I am stuck fighting against Weapon as… Ray, the one guy I stopped using after getting Rein and Vel. Yeah, rage mode thanks to getting hit by Vital hits in every attack).

I never expected several of the plot twists that have surfaced, though it would kind of explain why the demons stopped having interest after everyone else were at the levers.

I do have one complaint though (excluding enemies have a good three to five vital hits in succession on occasions), is that it is quite easy to be lost. Sure there is a journal, but it doesn’t seem the individual entries for quests are updated.

Either way, I hope the team best of luck with Awakening and hope that you all finish Act III +… along with coming back to Act II+ to fix that Stormpike bug because I believe THAT would help me against Weapon.

Thanks for playing and for dropping by to comment! Please accept my humblest apologies for the balance issues and bugs in Act II+. Stuff like the Stormpike bug never should’ve made it past testing and I’m sorry it’s hindering your ability to finish the game. In the original Act II, most players complained the Weapon fight was so easy it was anticlimactic, so I think we swung the pendulum too far in the other direction – whoops!

      • June 23, 2013 at 10:13 pm

I believe you might want to buff his health or defense up a bit and tone down on his critical ratio a tad… Then again I have no good grasp when it comes to balance in games, not yet. So don’t take my word for it. Either way, I initially thought he might have been overpowered when my first instinct after seeing two vital hits in a row was to try to heal up every turn when he gets one in.

Didn’t think it would have been better to just whack him over and over. Haha! Anyhow, I apologize for that complaint of mine. I didn’t give up at all. Once again, I wish the team best of luck!

    • June 23, 2013 at 10:08 pm

I take it back, about the problem with Weapon… because I just killed him with three hits. I feel awfully stupid about complaining about the vital hits from him now.

Just to let anyone know (if they happen to be reading this)
    Two quick things
-The official Act III+ will not be done until AFTER VS:A has had at least one episode released. The main reason for this is because VS:A was kickstarted and people paid money for it so the devs wanna get paid and pay the bills and thus they gotta focus on that first.
-I’ve been fortunate enough to receive permission to mod the game. I’ll be going over several of these issues for Act I+ and II+. I also am aware of the Stormpike issue and may be able to figure out how to fix it, hopefully. I’ve spent enough time with scripting that I’m becoming fairly comfortable with it, although diving into the actual ‘wall of script’ script editor just makes my head hurt.

It doesn’t help that the stupid RPG Maker XP developers didn’t bother to allow for resizable windows. On Linux Mint, one thing I loved was that EVERY SINGLE WINDOW IN THE OPERATING SYSTEM could be resized! Just…awesome :)

I’ve been replaying this game (the original ones) as of last week and I noticed something. On one of the endings, I believe it’s the main one, where Auria foils Ejaro’s plan completely and uses Night Zero…I recall a moment where Ejaro uses his voice power thing and tells Auria that the only way she can beat him is if she uses Night Zero.

The conversation Auria and Ejaro have before she uses Night Zero makes it seem as though Ejaro didn’t think Auria was capable of retaliation. But since he’s been known to manipulate, I got this wild thought that perhaps he wanted things to be that way all along. (I remember Auria finally standing up for herself and thought that perhaps with her sudden burst of power she had wiped away Ejaro’s influence on her.) Still, it made me think that in the end, Ejaro got his way…somehow. I guess this isn’t a question, just wanted to share my take on it.

Anyway, I’m not sure where I can contact you guys since most blogs/forums have last been updated about 2-3 years ago. I enjoyed playing this game the first time I stumbled upon it and I absolutely enjoyed it this time around, with a much deeper appreciation for all of the characters, antagonists or not. I wish you guys luck on VS: Awakening and all future projects!

Hello! Sorry for the late reply, but it seems your comment got caught in the spam folder for some reason.

VSA is still under very active development and we’re in the middle of reaching a huge milestone, so we should have some new screenshots and video to show off soon. Since we’ve been so busy with it, we just haven’t had any content to update the blog with lately, but that’ll be changing soon. If you want to follow us, the core team members post pretty regularly on Twitter: @projectbc (myself), @darthmongoose, and @apogeedwell.
